Incoming first-year students will dive into marine sciences, conservation, and more through a new Connect Abroad program in Mexico.  

Slated for Spring Break 2027, the program’s first cohort will explore vibrant coastal tropical ecosystems and marine conservation efforts firsthand while earning academic credit. The Marine Sciences in Mexico program will focus on the Yucatan Peninsula, with students visiting Cancun, Tulum, and Cozumel.  

Led by Assistant Professor Sara Rivero-Calle and Student Services Professional Bev Vantine, students will experience diverse marine environments and connect marine theory with real-world experiences.  

"Seeing these environments in person brings ocean science to life in a way that simply can’t be captured in a classroom or through photos,” Vantine said. “I’m also really looking forward to watching students make connections between what they’re learning in the field and how these experiences can lead to possible careers they haven’t yet thought of.” 

Throughout the week, students on the trip will cover a broad range of ocean and environmental topics, including beach erosion, coral restoration, and biodiversity. They will also bridge their marine science studies to the culture of the Yucatan Peninsula through excursions like visiting a fish market, taking a cooking class, visiting archeological sites, visiting a Mayan community, and learning about the indigenous people of Mexico.  

The program is open to any first-year student majoring in a science discipline or interested in completing a scientific diving minor, and the application to join the course is now open. Scholarships are available, and financial aid applies.  

"I hope students learn how to look at the ocean from a different perspective and see all the complex interconnected processes that make it so unique and beautiful,” Rivero-Calle said. "I also hope they gain appreciation for what they can do with the math, physics, geology, chemistry, biology, and computer science that they learn in school and see a direct application in marine sciences." 

The Marine Sciences in Mexico course joins a slate of Connect Abroad: Immerse opportunities hosted by Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. Immerse programs are tailor-made for first-year students who want to connect their academic or career interests with global experience; programs offer up to three credit hours. Because courses are designed with departments, cohorts get a deeper dive into their discipline through cultural engagement, professional site visits, and hands-on learning.
