Ethics for a Complex World

Collaboration, teamwork, and decision-making are essential in today’s workplace. As we navigate an increasingly complex and interconnected world, ethical leadership and reasoning stand out as foundational qualities and skills—ones that benefit professionals in many fields, shaping how they make decisions, solve problems, and serve society.

Grounding in practical ethics guides equity in patient care and access to treatment, builds the foundations of legal systems, strengthens a commitment to convey information accurately and honestly in the practice of journalism, and informs responsible scientific research and technology use. In the arts and humanities, practical ethics informs creative expression, cultural sensitivity, and the representation of diverse voices and viewpoints.

Training in ethics helps student grapple the big questions that they will ask and answer for the rest of their lives: How should I live? What is a virtuous life? What responsibilities do we have to future generations? What are the demands of altruism? How do I know if I act with integrity? What is the relationship between ethics and politics?

At UGA Rigorous Thinking Meets Real-World Responsibilities

Regardless of career or field of study, a foundation in ethics helps us confront dilemmas, balance competing interests, and act with integrity. At UGA, vibrant ethics programming fosters meaningful dialogue among students, faculty, staff, industry leaders, scholars, and activists. Come join the conversation!

Beginning in fall 2027, all UGA undergraduates, regardless of major, will complete a 3-credit course in ethical reasoning. These courses provide a foundation for understanding how ethical principles justify conduct, while students learn to navigate competing ethical complexities and apply principles of ethical reasoning across environmental, human, social, and technological contexts. This approach offers an active learning experience that fosters intellectual, personal, and professional growth.  Applied practice in ethical reasoning prepares students in any field of study for meaningful engagement in a global society and success in a variety of careers.
