Spring 2027 Publication Internship with the Athenaeum

The Athenaeum—UGA’s space for contemporary art in downtown Athens—seeks a publication intern for Spring 2027 for approximately 9 hours/week. From exhibition catalogues and brochures to e-newsletters and interpretive materials, the Publication Intern will gain hands-on experience engaging the full publishing process surrounding current and upcoming exhibitions at the Athenaeum. 

This Internship is ideal for students pursuing the Publications Certificate or for English and Comparative Literature majors, but applications are welcome from students in any discipline with strong writing and editing skills and an interest in visual art and publishing.

What The Publication Intern Will Do

Content Research and Creation

  • Research and identify content in archives and special collections.
  • Scan, organize, and maintain archival and research files.
  • Draft and edit text for exhibition publications, wall texts, newsletters, and related materials.

Editing and Proofreading

  • Proofread and edit drafts for clarity, consistency, style, grammar, and accuracy.
  • Fact-check information in footnotes, bibliographies, captions, and other publication materials.
  • Apply the Chicago Manual of Style to publication materials.

Visual Asset and Permissions Management

  • Track images and other visual assets for publications and exhibitions.
  • Assist the Director/Curator and Graduate Assistant with image-rights and permissions requests.
  • Learn basic image preparation, resizing, and layout workflows.

The Ideal Candidate

Applicants should already have:

  • Strong writing, grammar, spelling, and proofreading skills
  • Mastery with Microsoft Word and Excel, Google Drive and file sharing basics
  • Attention to detail
  • Interest in contemporary or visual art/publishing
  • Ability to manage multiple projects
  • Natural collaborator and self-starter
  • 3.0 GPA or above

    During the internship, interns will learn and apply:

  • Chicago style in a museum-publishing context
  • Publication project management
  • Image rights and permissions for visual arts publications
  • Archival research and file management
  • Image preparation and layout workflows

What You'll Gain

The Publication Intern will gain hands-on experience in museum publishing and exhibition-related research, with opportunities to develop skills in writing, editing, proofreading, archival research, image permissions, and publication project management. The intern will work closely with the Athenaeum's small team and gain insight into the development of publications and interpretive materials within a contemporary art institution.

Concurrently with the internship, the Publication Intern will register for FCID 4100: Humanities Internship class during the spring 2027 semester. This class meets four times during the semester (from 8:35 - 11:15 am on 1/13, 2/17, 3/17, and 4/21).  This class counts for three upper division credits and your Experiential Learning credit. This will also count for the Practice of Publishing requirement for the Publishing Certificate.  More information is available here: 

About the Athenaeum

Founded in 2021, the Athenaeum is a non-collecting contemporary art exhibition venue affiliated with the University of Georgia and the Lamar Dodd School of Art. Its mission is to support artists, pursue contemporary art and ideas with rigor, and to serve as a flexible space that invites extended looking and encourages critical thinking. We are dedicated to presenting the work of major artists in the field of contemporary art as well as centering under-recognized and emerging artists in the commission of new works and projects.
