We welcomed new faculty and staff colleagues into the Franklin College, celebrated new professorships, a Hall of Fame induction and so much more in this first month of the fall semester 2024. Congratulations to our colleagues for outstanding contributions and career achievements:

Kelly Dyer, professor in the department of genetics, director of the Integrated Life Sciences Program and co-director of the NIH T32 Genetics Training Grant program, is among 10 faculty and academic leaders named to the 2024-2025 cohort of the university’s Women’s Leadership Fellows Program

Theatre Arts endowed professorships: associate professor Vivian Appler was awarded the Kay Parker Professorship in Theatre Arts and Julie Ray, Professor and head of the department of theatre and film studies, was awarded the Caroline Reid Ridlehuber Professorship of Theatre Arts. 

Celebrated Nigerian novelist Chigozie Obioma joined the UGA faculty as the Helen S. Lanier Distinguished Professor of English in the department of English

Franklin College faculty members Daniel Bolshoy, associate professor of guitar, Hugh Hodgson School of Music; Jorge García-Granados, Spanish lecturer, Department of Romance Languages; Austin Heil, academic professional associate and director of the Marine Science Instructional Laboratory, Department of Marine Sciences; and Crystal Robinson, lecturer, Department of Cellular Biology, were named in the 20th cohort of the Service-Learning Fellows Program

John Knox, Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor in the department of geography and undergraduate coordinator for the Atmospheric Sciences Program, was among three USG faculty honored with the Felton Jenkins, Jr. Hall of Fame Faculty Award at the University System of Georgia (USG) 20th annual Regents’ Scholarship Gala on September 12

Mattia Pistone, assistant professor of Petrology and Volcanology in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences department of geology will serve as the 2024-2025 Distinguished Lecturer of the Continental Scientific Drilling Division of the Geological Society of America

The Franklin College announced the 2024-25 Academic Innovation Fellows – Trina Cyterski, Principal Lecturer, Undergraduate Program Coordinator in the department of psychology; and Jennifer McDowell, professor and head of the department of psychology

2024-25 Inclusive Excellence Fellows are Amy Petrongelli, assistant professor of voice in the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, and Suzanne Birch, associate professor, anthropology and geography
