Alumnus Peter Schreiner (M.S, chem '91, Ph.D '95) wins 2024 Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize, one of Germany's most prestigious research awards

The Modern Language Association of America announced the winner its thirty-third annual Katherine Singer Kovacs Prize for an outstanding book published in English or Spanish in the field of Latin American and Spanish literatures and cultures, Éric Morales-Franceschini, associate professor of English and Latin American and Caribbean Studies, for The Epic of Cuba Libre: The Mambí, Mythopoetics, and Liberation, published by the University of Virginia Press

Bill Pridemore, department head and Franklin Professor of Sociology, will moderate a panel at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in February. The panel, Crime and Justice Decision-Making: Paradigmatic Advances in Theory and Method, features three panelist in addition to Pridemore to discuss harnessing science in service of alleviating the social, health, and economic burdens associated with crime.

Two University of Georgia seniors and one recent graduate were selected for the Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Graduate Fellowship, marking the first time UGA has had three recipients in one year. Funded by the U.S. Department of State and administered by Howard University, the Pickering Fellowship prepares outstanding young people for Foreign Service careers in the U.S. Department of State. UGA has had a total of five Pickering Fellows—including the three this year—since the program began in 1992.

Broadway star, UGA grad, and art historian Calvin Orlando Smith (AB ’00) has taken advantage of every avenue to higher education that UGA has to offer

Learning to think outside the box: How Caroline Young, lecturer in the department of English, is helping to bring higher education to incarcerated populations

Ashni Patel, SPIA and Terry College double-major who also will earn a minor in Chinese language and literature from the Franklin College, became the eighth UGA student to receive the Schwarzman Scholarship and will join students from around the world pursuing a one-year master’s degree in global affairs at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, next fall

A delegation of six undergraduate students representing UGA at the 26th Annual Southeast Model African Union (SEMAU 2023) simulation in Kennesaw State University, Kennesaw, Nov. 8 – 11, 2023 won the “Most Outstanding Delegation Award” representing Kenya at the conference
