Generative AI student competition

The 2024 Generative AI Competition for UGA students took place this spring and the winners were announced this week. In the competition, UGA students and student teams were invited to use AI to create something meaningful to enrich the UGA community/experience. 

Eight projects were submitted, ranging in topic from threatened species to schedules. Earlier this month, the top three projects were determined by a panel of faculty judges: Chandler Christoffel, Frederick Maier, Aaron Meskin, and Jeanette Taylor. The winners and a digital showcase featuring all contest submissions can be found online at https://genaicontest.lmharding.com/.

"Student use of generative AI is often seen as a problem in the university context. But this contest, which was designed to encourage students to think creatively about generative AI, approached it as a something that has the potential to enrich the UGA community," said Aaron Meskin, professor and head of the department of philosophy. "We were delighted with the diverse range of projects that were submitted and impressed with the ideals and skills of our students." 

The Generative AI Student Competition was co-sponsored by the Provost’s Office, the Office of Instruction, and the Center for Teaching and Learning; was facilitated by the Faculty Learning Community “Innovating with AI: In and Beyond the Classroom;” and was co-coordinated by Lindsey Harding and Aaron Meskin.
