Major new initiatives on STEM education and research lead our kudos for the month of November:

Funded by a $3 million National Science Foundation grant, more than 100 UGA faculty members in science, technology, engineering and math will collaborate on a comprehensive research project that seeks to transform STEM education on campus and at research universities nationwide

The University of Georgia launched a new degree program in data science to train undergraduates at the interface of statistics and computer science to meet the rapidly growing demand for data scientists

UGA announced the new Interdisciplinary Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Research Building with a groundbreaking on Nov. 27. The groundbreaking marks the beginning of the construction of the ISTEM Research Building, which will house engineering, chemistry and related disciplines to promote collaborations between students, faculty and researchers

Samantha Joye, the Athletic Association Professor in Arts and Sciences in the marine sciences department at UGA, and Rutstein, an artist and the university’s third Delta Visiting Chair for Global Understanding, shared how they are working together to shine light on literal darkness during a lecture titled “Expeditions, Experiments and the Ocean: Arts and Sciences at Sea.” The Nov. 2 event, sponsored by the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts, was part of the fall 2018 Signature Lecture series and a plenary presentation of the Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities, or a2ru, conference held at UGA for the first time

A team of researchers led by Yohannes Abate, associate professor in the department of physics and astronomy, published a new study in Nature Communications describing one of the latest developments in nanoscale quantum materials in the quest for small, and controllable, confined light-matter interaction

Students from a variety of STEM disciplines filled the lawn of the Miller Learning Center five hours before kickoff for the Auburn game on Nov. 10, to share their research in second year of the STEMzone

On November 16, a record number of early action applicants to UGA, approximately 7,500 students received the good news that they have been offered admission to the Class of 2023

A grant from the U.S. Department of Defense’s National Security Education Program was awarded to the University of Georgia to establish the Russian Domestic Undergraduate Flagship Program

Double-Dawgs program reaches important milestone, with more than 150 linked bachelor’s/master’s degree programs now available

Congratulations to four graduate students who were poster and presentation winners in the "Four minutes, thirty-three seconds,” the fifth-annual arts research competition hosted by the Spotlight on the Arts festival

A partnership between a UGA professor Samantha Joye and the creator of the “Sherman’s Lagoon” comic strip has resulted in a new short film series, “The Adventures of Zack and Molly,” which highlights the Gulf of Mexico and the importance of healthy oceans
