Faculty Kudos, October 2013

And speaking of great faculty, ours continue to shine with professional accomplishments, new grants and awards that bring UGA and the Franklin College great honor and distinction. A few this month include:

David P. Landau, Distinguished Research Professor and director of the Center for Simulational Physics, was awarded the newly created title of Mainz Visiting Professor for 2013-2015 by the "Graduiertenschule (Graduate School of Excellence)-Materials Science in Mainz" in ­Germany. The award is given for lifetime achievement of the awardee.

Fausto O. Sarmiento, a professor of geography and director of the UGA Neotropical Montology Collaboratory, has been elected chair of the Mountain Geography Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers for 2013-2014. 

Rick Tarleton, UGA Distinguished Research Professor of Tropical and Emerging Global Diseases, will chair the Immunity and Host Defense Study Section of the Center for Scientific Review, National Institutes of Health. 

A team of researchers led by co-principal investigators Geert-Jan Boons and Kelley Moreman have received a five-year $7.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to help better understand one of the most fundamental building blocks of life

Instructor and recent doctoral graduate in the department of history Joshua Haynes spent two days with country music singer Trisha Yearwood as she discovered her family heritage on the TLC television series "Who Do You Think You Are?"
