The UGA Opera Theatre returns to Hodgson Concert Hall for the Thursday Scholarship Series. The Opera Theatre will combine with the UGA Symphony Orchestra and the Hugh Hodgson School of Music’s Choral area to create another masterful opera production, semi-staged with English supertitles.

Anatoly Sheludyakov, resident accompanist at the UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music, performs as part of the Hugh Hodgson Faculty Series. Sheludyakov is an accomplished pianist and composer and was recipient of the title “Honored Artist of the Russian Federation” in 1999.

This Hodgson Wind Ensemble performance comprises several exciting 20th century works, including Dana Wilson’s  “Trombone Concerto,” featuring special guest soloist Joshua Bynum, associate professor of trombone at the UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music.

The internationally-renowned ARCO Chamber Orchestra returns for the first concert of its 2016-2017 season.

An International Trumpet Guild prize winner and the chair of the UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music’s Brass area, Brandon Craswell will perform as part of the Hugh Hodgson Faculty Series.

The UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music’s premier wind ensemble returns with a performance featuring David Maslanka’s “A Child’s Garden of Dreams” and Karel Husa’s “Music for Prague” in Hodgson Concert Hall on Tuesday, September 13, at 8 p.m. This concert is free to attend—patrons are encouraged to bring a non-perishable canned food item to be donated to the UGA Food Bank.

"Climate Change and Biological Conservation in Georgia: John Abbot and the Pearly Eye Butterflies of Athens-Clarke County" 

Porter will discuss the global phenomenon of anthropogenic climate change in the context of conservation in Georgia and Athens-Clarke County. He will announce a major new discovery of the presence of three closely-related species of Pearly-Eye butterflies with the Tallassee Forest. Porter will present evidence that this currently occurs nowhere else in the world.

The UGA Symphony Orchestra, directed by Mark Cedel, opens its season with another fantastic night of music, featuring some of the best student musicians in the country and the UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music’s renowned Despy Karlas Professor of Piano, Martha Thomas.

David Starkweather, professor of cello, performs works from the cello repertoire, displaying the talent that earned him the praise of famed French cellist Pierre Fournier, who called Starkweather “one of the best cellists of his generation.”
