Poe-tober: Spooky POE-etry

An afternoon of spooky poetry and crafts inspired by Edgar Allan Poe. We'll be sharing a host of thrilling rhymes and helping you write your own. Plus, make you're own eerie silhouette craft. For children ages 7-11 and their caregiver and led by Keir Bridges in the story room. Admission is free. Those in attendance will be entered to win a copy of an Edgar Allan Poe book.

Lecture: Jeff Rich

Visual artist Jeff Rich received his master's of fine art degree in photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design. His current work focuses on ecology, politics, economics, recreation and the environment through photography of watersheds. His project “Watershed: A Survey of The French Broad River” was awarded the 2010 Critical Mass Book Award and was published as a monograph in 2012. His work has been featured in Fraction magazine and Photo-Eye Photographer’s Showcase.

Music in the Galleries: Ben Vida

For the closing reception of Spectra: Lamar Dodd School of Art Faculty Exhibition, artist and experimental composer Ben Vida will perform a new piece for electronics that utilizes immersive sonic materials and explores intense auditory phenomena.

Lecture and Reception: Deborah Blum

Deborah Blum, Pulitzer Prize winning American science journalist, columnist and author of five books, will present a seminar on "The Poisoner's Guide to Life." This story is about one of the most famous poisons, arsenic, but also an insightful look at the ways poisons have shaped both our history and the world we know today.

Host: Friends of the Georgia Natural Museum of History. Co-sponsored by the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, the Odum School of Ecology and the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences.

Department of Classics Colloquium

The department of Classics in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences will host a colloquium featuring visiting scholars Christiane Reitz and Simone Finkmann of the University of Rostock on Oct. 7 at 3:30 p.m. in Room 265 of Park Hall. The event is sponsored in part by a cooperative agreement between the University of Rostock and University of Georgia, and by the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Faculty Travel Program. The colloquium is free and the public is invited to attend.
