Trial Gardens’ Public Open House

The 35th annual Trial Gardens includes vendors such as Maisie Loo from UGArden selling herbal teas, garden tours and more. The Trial Garden are in full bloom and filled with annuals, perennials, roses, containers and hanging baskets due to the outstanding effort of Master Gardeners, student workers, and the new garden manager, Brandon Coker.

GMOA Museum Mix

The museum’s thrice-annual late-night art party features a live DJ, free refreshments and galleries open until 11 p.m. Free admission. #museummix

Lecture: Drew Swanson

"From Georgia to California and Back: The Rise, Fall, and Rebirth of Southern Gold Mining," Drew Swanson, history professor at Wright State University.

Gold nuggets, historic maps, photographs, postcards and other artifacts help tell the story of Georgia’s antebellum gold rush, which preceded the frenzy in California by two decades, in an exhibit at the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library.

Films in Key West: “Matinee”

In conjunction with the exhibition “Avocation to Vocation: Prints by F. Townsend Morgan.” Join the Georgia Museum of Art for films discussed by scholars, filmmakers and students. Each film will include a 15-minute introduction by a guest speaker and short conversations about the film following the screening.

In "Matinee," a small-time film promoter releases a kitschy horror film during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Directed by Joe Dante and starring John Goodman and Cathy Moriarty. (1993, PG. 99 min.)

Sunflower Music Series: String Theory

Summer was made for outdoor concerts – and so were the amphitheater and terraced lawns in the Flower Garden of the State Botanical Garden of Georgia at the University of Georgia. Now in its 16th season, the Sunflower Music Series has placed both world-renowned and new-on-the-scene musicians in a world-class botanical environment. Originally formed in 1993, String Theory plays old time, bluegrass and Americana music. While the lineup has evolved and changed throughout its history, the band has consistently been made up of some of Athens' finest acoustic musicians.

A Florida ship salvager, Loxi, falls for Jack, captain of a ship wrecked on the Key West shore. However, their romance is complicated by the arrival of another suitor and eventually leads to tragedy. (123 min.)

"Challenges and Approaches to Address Gender Inequality and Bias in Science: Achieving a More Diverse STEM Community," Semarhy Quinones-Soto, Franklin College Visiting Scholar and director of the Student Research Center at California State University, Sacramento.
