Cinema Politique: "Yawar Mallku" (Blood of the Condor)

Film screening and discussion. Film summary: "Yawar Mallku" (Blood of the Condor) is a 1969 film by Jorge Sanjinés. Set in Bolivia, the film tells the story of a Peace Corps-like American agency that is secretly sterilizing indigenous women under the guise of providing health care, provoking an uprising by the targeted population. Based upon information shared with the filmmaker by the indigenous population. Discussant: Khédija Gadhoum specializes in contemporary Latin American literature and culture.

Colloquium: Iconicity in African Musical Thought and Expression

Kofi Agawu, Princeton University Hughes-Rogers Professor of Music, will present a colloquium lecture on “Iconicity in African Musical Thought and Expression.”

The event is hosted by the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, the African Studies Institute and the Musicology/Ethnomusicology Student Association, and sponsored by the Willson Center.

Romance Languages Special Guest Colloquium: José Antonio Rodríguez Garrido

"Identidades múltiples y agencias culturales en la construcción de la biografía de Juan de Espinosa Medrano (¿1629?-1688)," José Antonio Rodríguez Garrido, professor, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. He will offer new critical perspectives for contemplating the life and work of Juan de Espinosa Medrano (circa 1629 - 1688), who rendered the Baroque poetics of Luis de Góngora into a distinctly American literary style and also adapted European dramatic models in the earliest Quechua theater.

Linguistics Conference at UGA (LCUGA4)

LCUGA4 is an annual linguistics conference with a strong interdisciplinary focus. The theme this year is "Crossing Boundaries," presentations from students and faculty from UGA, as well as around the U.S. and abroad, that bridge the gap between linguistics and other fields will be presented. Admission to conference talks and plenary events is free for all UGA affiliates. In addition to more than 30 talks over the course of the conference weekend by student and faculty presenters from UGA, around the U.S., and abroad, the event also will feature three plenary speakers:
