Southern Women Artists Film Series: “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter”

The film adaptation of Carson McCullers’ famous novel, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, stars Alan Arkin. When deaf-mute Singer moves to a small city to be near his only friend confined in a hospital, he grows attached to his landlady’s sensitive 16-year-old daughter. (1968, G, 122 min.) Presented in conjunction with Central to Their Lives: Southern Women Artists in the Johnson Collection. Sponsored by UGA Parents Leadership Council.

The summer poetry series "Seat in the Shade" kicks off July 11 with a slate of notable writers that include Georgia's poet laureate.

The event is hosted by Melisa Cahnmann-Taylor, a professor in the University of Georgia College of Education.

Held in the air-conditioned conservatory,  this popular annual concert features popular and patriotic tunes. This concert is always standing room only, so arrive early.

Cello Duo from 5:30-6:30, featuring Valentina Ignjic and Adriana Ceia, first-year doctoral students.

Jazz Quintet from 6:30-7:30, led by Michael Jarrell.

August 7:

All musiicans are current Hugh Hodgson School of Music undergrad and/or graduate students. The Savannah Room Restaurant & Bar are open during the performances.

To celebrate its upcoming issue, The Georgia Review will host a reading by Elly Bookman, winner of the fifth annual Loraine Williams Poetry Prize. Review assistant editor Soham Patel will be the opening reader, and the event will include a musical performance by Cortez Garza.

A reception with light refreshments will follow the reading.

Fall 2018 classes begin. 

To commemorate the garden’s 50th anniversary, the Sunflower Music series season starts with a celebration of 1968 (the year of the Beatle’s White Album). William Tonks will review each concert and tell a few tales of the more than 60 Sunflower concerts since he first proposed outdoor concerts that would bring together people from two of his favorite places: the Athens music scene and the botanical garden. Includes a full breakfast.
