Student provides stress relief through tutoring

By:
Alan Flurry

UGA is home to an artist with a gift for math and a heart for helping her fellow students. Meet Interior Design major in the Lamar Dodd School of Art, Maelyn Ehrman, who will start a position as an interior designer with Arcollab, a multi-disciplinary architecture and design firm in Athens after graduation in May:

Math can be frustrating, especially during a pandemic, but Maelyn Ehrman is here to help.

“Math in general is a subject that can be really debilitating for students,” said Ehrman, who is an art major and graduates in May. “So I enjoy alleviating some of that frustration and helping my peers in that way.”

Ehrman is a lead tutor for the peer tutoring branch of PLaTO (Peer Learning and Teaching Others), a program of the Division of Academic Enhancement. She has been helping her fellow University of Georgia students study since her first year on campus four years ago.

“I did tutoring in high school and enjoyed it,” she said. “I found out about the position through a work study job posting, and I’ve been involved with DAE ever since.”

Ehrman provided the Chronicles with additional detail about her background and UGA experience:

"As for my tutoring area, while it might not be the norm to have a design student tutoring math, I do have a "math brain" and have always enjoyed math in school. When I came to UGA, I was undecided in my major and I accepted the tutoring position because I had done some math tutoring in high school and had enjoyed it. Even though I did not end up pursuing a STEM major, I still really enjoyed my job with the DAE, and that the position allowed me to continue doing math. I have since added a few art classes to my tutoring roster, including ARST 2210."

An extraordinary student. We wish her all the best and appreciate the help and support she has provided to students on campus.
