Laboratory of Archeology: Preserving Georgia's unique past

The University of Georgia Laboratory of Archeology, established in the late 1940's, marked another important milestone in its distinguished history on January 18 at the celebration of its new location in Athens.

Organized within the department of anthropology, the Laboratory provides opportunities for students of varied backgrounds to engage in archaeology and history, serving the intellectual growth of our undergraduate and graduate students through employment, internships, and mentored research. Such activities have done much to serve as the basis for budding careers in academia and the private sector alike. Through the work of staff and affiliated faculty, the Laboratory also fosters discovery and inquiry into the nature of past societies and what that means for us today. The Laboratory engages the public by communicating the need for preservation and conservation of historic resources around the state, filling in the details about what we have learned about Georgia’s history to its citizens. 

The open house and reception on Friday was celebrated with remarks from Dean Dorsey, MA student Mary Porter Freeman, director emeritus Mark Williams, director and professor Victor Thompson, and Laboratory of Archeology operations director Amanda Roberts Thompson.

The new building on Whitehall Road the Laboratory will continue its work as a leader in the care and stewardship of artifacts and archaeological information, as well as in its training of the next generation of researchers and managers of historic resources around the country and the world.
