Starting a New Semester with eLC

With the start of each semester brings a new eLC course section, but that doesn’t have to mean you have to start from scratch!  Use these tips for a stress-free transition into the new semester.

  1. Postpone that Java update for now  UPDATE!  Java 1.6.0_30 is now available for download, and it seems to have corrected the issues affecting eLC.
Java update 1.6.0_29 breaks key functionality of eLC on PCs, so it’s best to ignore that Java Update reminder that pops up on your computer until a solution has been found.  (Macs should be fine as long as you are using Firefox 8.0.1 or Safari.) If you have already updated Java, contact your local client services technician or submit a ticket to the Franklin Help Desk for assistance rolling back Java to a previous version.

  2. Copy content from an existing course
There’s no need to recreate the wheel!  If you have all of your documents and links organized in a course section from a previous semester, just follow these instructions to copy your content right over to your new section!  It will automatically remove any student data (such as homework, discussion, and email messages) before importing to the new section.  Make a mistake?  No problem!  Submit a ticket to the Franklin Help Desk with the course name and UGA call number of the section, and we can reset it.

  3. Make your courses easier to identify

If you teach multiple sections of the same course and don’t want to cross-list them, this tip is for you!  Follow these instructions to update your Section Description.  By updating the Section Description, you can make your course easier for you and your students to identify in the Course List.  Common description ideas include the days (MWF), time (10:00 – 11:00 a.m.), and location (Baldwin 264) information, but feel free to be creative!

  4. Don’t sweat student access
Course sections will become visible and available to students 1 day before classes begin, and students should be automatically enrolled in your section based on OASIS enrollment data.  (Changes made in section enrollment during the drop/add period can take 24 to 48 hours to be reflected, so you may want to give it a day or so for eLC to catch up.)  Don’t have time to wait?  Follow these instructions to manually enroll users in to your course sections.

  5. Hide old courses

Don’t let those old courses get in the way -- or worse! -- waste time updating an old section by mistake!  Clean up the clutter and hide your old courses.  Click on the pencil icon pencil image in the top right corner of your Course List and select click the “Hide Link” button under the Visibility column for each of your old courses.  When you are finished, click on the My eLearning Commons tab to return to your course list.
